How to Subscribe

Staying up to date with the latest happenings within CSHCL has been simplified and automated. It's like having an updated church bulletin delivered to your computer every time there is a news update. It's FREE and easy too!

So how is this done?
RSS is an acronym for "Really Simple Syndication." It is simply a technology that allows us to share and distribute content such as CShcl news, events, and Garys musings.

Through the use of RSS and a RSS Reader we can provide frequent news and event updates and you, as a subscriber, can receive these updates automatically. Receiving information through RSS is very much like having a subscription to the local newspaper. When you want to find out what is going on, you go to your doorstep, retrieve the paper and get the latest news.

You can use our RSS widget witch is already setup or these:

RSS requires two pieces:
1) The user needs to have an 'RSS reader' (sometimes called an aggregator) to collect the RSS (XML) news feeds from websites and turn them into text and links that a user can browse. Readers can be web browsers like
Internet Explorer 7, Firefox , My Yahoo, My Google, My MSN and My AOL accounts, may also be used. There are also standalone applications like Awasu.

2) A website must have a RSS (XML) feed channel that is set up to work with the news reader. These feed links are highlighted with the orange 'XML' boxes. E.g.

How do I subscribe to RSS feeds?

Basic - Web Browser
Internet Explorer 7 - Navigate to the cshcl home page. You should see this icon light up in the toolbar which means RSS feeds are available on that page. Click on it and a popup menu will present the available feeds. Select a feed and follow the directions for 'subscribing'. Click the 'Gold Star' icon on the left side of the toolbar to open your Favorites and click the feed bookmark to see the latest RSS content.

Firefox - Firefox calls RSS subscriptions "Live Bookmarks". Navigate to the MorningStar home page and you should see this icon light up in the bottom right corner of your Firefox browser. This means RSS feeds are available on that page. Click on it and a popup menu will present the feeds; select one to subscribe. The RSS feeds will appear in your Bookmarks list.

Basic - Web Portal
If you have an account with
Yahoo! Google, MSN, or AOL, you can add XML feeds to your home page by clicking the respective 'Add' links:

For those a little more computer saavy, you may want to use a desktop news reader application. News readers are created to specifically manage XML subscriptions. Here are just a few:
Awasu (Win), SharpReader (Win), NetNewsWire (OS X). All allow you to display and subscribe to the RSS feeds you want.

Once you have installed the news reader, use your web browser and go to the web page with the RSS feed you want. Locate the button (XML)  Right-click it and select "Copy Shortcut" from the popup menu [This is the subscription's channel location]. Go to your news reader and click 'File -> New Channel' (Awasu) or 'File -> Open RSS Feed' (SharpReader). Right-click in the text box and 'Paste' the RSS feed channel. Follow the prompts for adding the feed/channel.
