Musings

I have been counseling people
for years as a friend and minister and recently started thinking about some of
the common things that people bring up. Without question the greatest thing that
people combat is fear, and it’s often fear of the unknown.
How am I going to pay this
bill? What will my husband or wife do? How can I help my children with their
problems? When will I get a job? How can I survive without my spouse (who just
left or died)? Oh, the list goes on and on!
Have you ever heard a noise
that scared you, especially late at night? You may have even called for help…
and then when you examined it, it turned out to be something benign and
harmless?
That’s what God has promised
to do for us if we will let Him; that He will face our greatest fears for us and
that He will be the answer. Most of the fears that we face are greater in our
imaginations than they are in reality! Our minds are so powerful that they can
take something small in our future and create a mountain of fear over the “what
ifs” of the situation until we are paralyzed into inaction.
There are over 100 times in
the Bible where the term “fear not” is used! Isn’t there a lesson in that for
us?
One of the greatest fears
that people I’ve counseled have is loneliness, especially after divorce or death
of a spouse or child. The person that has left always leaves a void that fear
says you won’t be able to replace. The emptiness that arrives after the loss can
multiply the fears of the future until you’re not able to enjoy the pleasures of
the current moment. How sad!
Jesus said “And fear not
them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him
which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28)
What God wants us to do is
two things – fear Him only and trust Him for the rest!
The Bible says that the fear
of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10) and is also the beginning
of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7). God is the only one who can destroy both body and
soul in hell. He is our Creator. He made us. He gave us our personality. He is
the only one in charge of our lives and the things that control it. Doesn’t it
make sense that we should fear Him?
Not in the respect of being scared of God; but rather fearing His power and
understanding that He can and will be God of our lives if we’ll let Him, instead
of keeping that job for ourselves. When we get that understanding THEN we can
“Cast all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (I
Peter 5:7)
Are you fearing God and
trusting Him for the rest?
