Musings

Have you ever noticed how
attracted we are to brand names? Just the addition of a certain name to a
product can completely alter how our minds react to it. What do these brand
names conjure up in your mind?
Hummer – big, strong,
tough, take-it-everywhere vehicle
Cadillac – “World’s best
synonym for quality”, they claimed in the 50’s
Kia – small, cheap
transportation
Yugo – complete junk!
And the list goes on and
on covering cars, clothes, sports equipment, perfumes – if you can think of it,
the name of a product brings a mind connection in some way for us.
What about churches? What
are some of the code words that bring a certain connection to your mind? First,
there are church “brand names” that we all know and recognize….
Catholic, Baptist,
Methodist, Lutheran… those are some of the large tents that have tens of
thousands of members worldwide.
Next are the countless groups that are smaller and independent, like Baptist
(but not Southern Baptist!), Wesleyan, Holiness, Methodist Episcopal, and more.
Within all of these
churches are code words that bring a reaction if they are mentioned.
Baptism, tithing, Holy
Ghost, communion, tongues, missions, marriage – all of these mean different
things in different groups, of course.
I’ve got a different list
of code words that I think churches should talk about and consider if they are
brave enough.
Love. Fellowship.
Inclusion. Sin. Racism. Holiness. Elitism. Evangelism. Immigrants. Acceptance.
Sanctification. Community. Homosexuality.
Not all of these are easy to talk about but if you read about Jesus and his
teachings, I have no doubt he would be tackling some of the most powerful issues
of today. If we are his ambassadors, shouldn’t we be tackling them too?
“For I am not ashamed of
the gospel of Christ…” (Romans 1:16)
