Gary's
Musings
by Gary Collier |
I often wonder what you, the
reader of this newspaper, think of these columns each week. Are they something
that you skip over while you look for the classifieds? Do you skim the first 3
lines, waiting to be grabbed before you’ll commit to reading the entire column?
Do they challenge you to
examine yourself and your relationship with God, or are they sugar candy for
your soul?
What does attending church do
for you? Do you mostly go for the fellowship? Do you go to hear your preacher’s
inspiring sermons? The great music? Or are you there to fulfill an obligation?
There are a lot of lazy Christians, that’s for sure. Why should you expend your
energy when someone else will get the job done? Why should you stick YOUR neck
out? After all, what’s in it for you?
Someone will preach the
sermon. Someone will sing the songs. Someone will pray the prayers, teach the
classes, count the money, vacuum the carpet and feed the throngs. And yes, even
write the columns!
If you’re not the one doing
the work, have you stopped lately to say “thank you” to the one who is? Have you
patted them on the back instead of criticizing their work? Maybe you don’t feel
the same call that they do, but are you supporting them in what they’re doing
for God?
If God has saved your soul
from sin, then you’re part of His family. There is something for you to do for
God, and that something usually involves giving to others in some way. It really
IS more blessed to give than to receive, as Jesus said. (Acts 20:35) It’s pretty
easy to give a “thank-you”, and the person you give it to won’t take it for
granted, I assure you.
So to all who are working
for God, THANK YOU! To those who are doing jobs that are often mundane and
thankless, THANK YOU! To those who keep reaching out to others when it doesn’t
seem that anyone wants to help you, THANK YOU! To those who teach young children
Bible stories and eternal values from God’s word, THANK YOU!
And to those who have read
this column to the end and feel God’s spirit asking you to do more for Him...
thank HIM!
What are you planning on
doing for God in 2008?
