Musings

Some people want you to believe that if you choose to
serve God that everything in your life will be wonderful from that point on. The
sky will always be blue, the wind will always be at your back and you will
always have a mountaintop view!
Nothing
could be further from the truth! “Life” goes on, regardless of whether you’re
saved or not. Matthew 5:45 tells us that God “maketh his sun to rise on the evil
and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.”
A family
rejoices in a hospital room with the birth of their first child. One floor
beneath them a family grieves at the death of a loved one.
A young
couple walks out of the courthouse laughing and smiling – they’ve just gotten
their marriage license. Another couple leaves the same courthouse in separate
vehicles – they’ve just gotten a divorce.
A man
leaves his attorney’s office with a bounce in his step. He’s just set up his new
corporation for his new business and he’s excited at the prospects. Later that
afternoon someone else leaves the same attorney’s office with their head bowed
and their expression sorrowful. They’ve just had to file for bankruptcy after
their company didn’t make it.
Someone
gets hired – someone gets fired. Someone graduates and someone drops out. Some
seem to have the “golden touch” while others never get ahead, no matter what
they do. Two different people find out they have cancer. One lives, the other
dies.
Oh, the
list goes on and on. Life is filled with uncertainties. “The only thing sure is
death and taxes”, the old saying goes. And that’s only half true, too. The rich
are able to avoid and shield themselves from taxes that most folks pay. Death,
then, is the only certainty in life.
So we
stand at a crossroads, each of us, every day. We wake up in the morning not
knowing what will happen that day. We can decide to leave the house and serve
God… or we can be stubborn and try to live “life” alone, without God’s help.
If you
can remove your pride and your selfishness aside, the decision to serve God is
both wise and comforting. I don’t know what’s in store for today, but God does.
I don’t have the answers to the problems that come up, but God does. I certainly
don’t have the power to change a situation, but God does! And that, folks, is
the comfort that only the Holy Spirit can bring. Whatever comes up, I’m leaning
on God to handle it. The same God who can’t lie, who can’t deny Himself and who
can’t be tempted with evil. He doesn’t have respect of persons and He loves us
all the same. Who among us can say that?
I’m
giving my future to God – how about you?
