Behind my house is a creek that flows to Lake Chehaw. It’s a tea-stained ribbon of water that flows ever-so-slowly through a canopy of cypress trees with streaks of Spanish moss intertwined through their branches. There’s not much development along its banks, making it easy to get lost in what feels like another world.

It twists and bends like a snake with a bad back, making you wonder what’s around the next turn ahead. Once you pass that turn, it’s almost impossible to look back and see where you came from. Each turn leads to the next, one by one, until you finally see Lake Chehaw in the distance, the ultimate destination of Muckalee Creek.

I see all kinds of folks go by if I’m in my back yard. Some are rowing canoes or kayaks, enjoying the scenery. Some are fishing, just drifting along with the stream, hoping for luck. Some come by so fast in their speed boats that I wonder where in the world they’re going, what are they doing, to be in such a rush?

“We’re floating down the stream of time, we have not long to wait”, one traditional hymn says. I thought of that song while working in my back yard last week, realizing how the creek mirrors our lives.

We don’t know what’s around the next bend in our life, do we? It’s easy to worry about it to the point that we forget to appreciate the scenery and the view from where our canoe is right now. Seems that we think about and burn energy worrying over tomorrow, when today is all we really have.

And once we pass that next bend, the only thing that we can ‘see’ when we turn around to look back is in our memories and our hearts. This stream of life only flows in one direction, and there is no going back.

And in the end, there is a final destination.  “It is appointed unto man once to die, and after this the judgement.” (Hebrews 9:27)

It makes sense to ask the Savior to ride along with us in our “life boat”, doesn’t it? He alone can calm the storms, soothe our fears and “land us safely in the port with friends we love so dear”, as the old hymn goes.

What is your journey down this river of life like so far? Why don’t you ask Jesus to come along and ride with you?
