Gary's
Musings
by Gary Collier |
Moving to Albany earlier this
year means that there will be less separation of the seasons than we’re used to.
Winter in Albany, for example, isn’t like winter in other places! I despise cold
weather, so I’m looking forward to a mild winter season here.
Have you ever thought about
the different seasons in our lives? The average life expectancy for adults
living in the U.S. is now 77.6 years, according to medicalnewstoday.com. So by
breaking that down into 4 seasons we find that our “spring” lasts until we are
19. We pass from “summer” to “autumn” when we reach 39 and we are in our
“winter” years after we reach age 58.
Boy, that’s pretty scary,
isn’t it? What season is your life in? What are you doing to enjoy it while it
lasts?
Remember when we were kids
and how long summer looked when we first got out of school? Remember when school
started back how that same summer felt so short? That’s a good analogy of our
lives, isn’t it? We ride along and hardly consider that our end will come as
fast as summer’s end did years ago… and many die unprepared to meet God as a
result.
At 48 I’ve come to realize
that your mind doesn’t ever catch up to your body in chronological age. I feel
like I’m in my early 30’s in my mind… but the mirror shows someone older! I
often wonder why many people don’t get serious about serving God while they’re
still young and in good health. It seems that some wait until they’re in
horrible health and have finally come to understand that they’re not going to
live forever before they get serious with God – what a waste, though!
Being in fellowship with God
and working for Him is the ultimate joy in life! It’s not something that is
“just for old folks” – it’s what makes us content deep down inside, no matter
our age. What makes life even better is to serve God with your family! We are
generational people. Your choice to serve God will greatly influence your
children, siblings and even your parents!
Yes, this column is a plea
to you. Which season are you in already? Are you right with God? Have you asked
His forgiveness for your sins and have you asked Him to fill you with the Holy
Spirit? Your “winter” is fast approaching… and one day you will awake for the
last time. Will you be ready to go home?
”So teach us to number our
days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)
