Gary's
Musings
by Gary Collier |
”The times, they are a changin’, Bob Dylan wrote years
ago during the tumult of the ‘60s and the Vietnam war. Those words still ring
true, 40 years later.
From one
war to another – Vietnam, Grenada, Iraq I and now Iraq II. From telephone to
pagers to cell phones with built-in cameras to PDAs. From Commodore 64 to IBM PC
to Macs to integrated wireless systems. From console TVs to large screens to LCD
and flat screens.
Faster
and faster and faster seems to be the motto of the world around us. “This” will
save you time, the commercials scream. “That” will make your job so much easier,
the ads tell us. Where is all of this “extra time” that we should have saved up
by now, I want to know? How come we’re not working 20 hour weeks if all of our
new toys can save us half of the time and effort that we used before?
In the
midst of this frenetic, turbo-charged world that we live in people are going
back to the basics for comfort and peace. Log cabin sales are at an all-time
peak. Gardening is a hobby that has sales in the billions annually. We long for
things that remind us of a simpler time and a slower day. We want things that
will impact us and remain meaningful long after the next wave of technology
comes along.
What
about the Bible that is lying around somewhere in your house? Do you remember
where it is? How thick is the layer of dust on it?
You were
raised with it, probably, and like so many others you’ve left it behind in the
rush of your life. You work, you parent, you have fun, you vacation, you travel,
you relax and you constantly rush from one task to another, with barely enough
time to breathe… and your Bible sits in the last place you laid it, cover
closed, dust gathering… the greatest book ever, unused and seldom thought about.
Why not
find it, dust it off and see if God will speak to you while you read it for the
first time in a long time? Unlike the world around us, His words are timeless
and true for every generation. “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in
heaven.”, Psalm 119:89 tells us. The Bible is the calm eye in the hurricane of
life. It has answers for our eternal questions. It reminds us of our frailty and
warns us of our impending judgment. It offers God’s forgiveness for our past
sins and promises the power of His spirit for our future, if we seek Him. The
God who “cannot lie” (Titus 1:2) whispers “Peace” in those eternal words.
Will you
take the time to listen to Him soon?
